The scene begins with two lovers making up inside their SUV at night when suddenly a marine, Fuentes, during night exercise crashed on their rooftop going through the roof of the SUV. The parachute failed and the owner of the SUV is from the marines.

NCIS goes to investigate and surprisingly Kate arrives. Obviously she accepted the job offer and Gibbs welcomes Kate. Gibbs has brought with him an NCIS cap which fits Kate.

The marine is not happy with the investigation of NCIS and Gibbs pulls a stunt telling the man-in-charge that he is calling their commandant.

From the initial investigation, the primary parachute failed but the marine is intoxicated with sulfuric acid not to have the reflexes to pop his second chute open.

Kate was with Abby on the lab and was fascinated with Abby's skills who told her story that when she was a kid she was hooked up with someone who was into finding reactions and actions -- that got her to the lab. Kate on the other hand says she wants to be a lawyer but was bored spending time with inmates after a year and just wanted to strap a gun as suggested by Abby.

The investigation continues by learning that nine parachutes were rigged not to open and Gibbs pulls people into the investigation room. Kate gets the first taste of the psychological warfare Gibbs pulls off.

Gibbs visit the boy of the killed marine and goes on to question more marines. Before that Kate asks Dinozzo how he got into NCIS which he answered -- He Smiled.

Gibbs, Kate and Dinozzo goes through the locker of marines and found the items used to kill the marine in one of the marines. Apparently the suspect says he was setup and the evidence was planted. They go deeper into the investigation and suspects the captain of the marine was responsible for the rigged chute.

In turns out another of the marine was responsible and he confessed on board a plane thirty seconds before jump up where Gibbs forced him to use the reserved chute of the killed marine. He knew it was not going to work and ended up confessing.
