Two years ago, she was an unknown 13-year-old whose only claim to fame was her famous “achy-breaky” dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, and a pending Disney pilot about a precocious tweener with a secret second life as a budding pop superstar.What a difference a couple of years can make.
For Miley Cyrus, fact has overtaken fiction, with a sky-rocketing, Hannah Montana-propelled, real-world singing career that has yielded a couple of chart-busting hit albums for Cyrus and an instant sellout international concert tour, which arrives at the Air Canada Centre next Saturday (and is also soon to be a major motion picture).
Who knew? Well, she did, for one – even at that age. And so, eventually, did her dad, who co-stars on the series, just as an even younger Miley had her own recurring role on his Toronto-shot show Doc.
Back in January 2006, at the annual TV critics’ mid-season preview in L.A., father and daughter sat together onstage to prime the press for the March debut of the as-yet unseen Disney Channel series Hannah Montana (airing here on Family) which would very shortly thereafter go right through the roof. Of course, there was no way of knowing that back then. And Billy Ray couldn’t help but be parentally protective.
