The judges thought Archie performed better than David Cook. In all fairness, David Archuleta did a wonderful performance during the night but all his three songs had the same style, body movements, etc. that becamse so monotonous. He played it safe, singing Imagine in the end.
David Cook summed up his personality by telling Simon that he thought about it and his perspective was why do something he has already done? But he said he understand Simon.
Despite of him knowing he could have sang Billie Jean, he went out singing something from the heart that showed his true self. David Archuleta played it safe ending up refined in his performance. David Cook took the plunge and played all three songs differently.
